It’s no surprise that job growth in AI and Data Science has been massive the past four years. It doesn’t matter what industry — people are finally realizing that they have data already, and the possibilities to leverage that data are endless. But…you probably already knew that. What may come as a surprise is just how much growth there has been over the past four years.
According to LinkedIn’s 2020 Emerging Jobs Report, “hiring growth for [the Artificial Intelligence Specialist] role has grown 74% annually in the past four years.” Skills that fall under this category of job role, according to LinkedIn, include “Machine Learning, Deep Learning, TensorFlow, Python, Natural Language Processing.” Looking on the financial side of this career path — it is a lucrative one to follow! According to Indeed, the average yearly salary for a Machine Learning Engineer is $138,243. That’s a lot of money, especially considering that these roles are growing at such a fast rate. The third fastest-growing job field in the Emerging Jobs Report is Data Scientist. At 37% annual growth, with an average salary of $122,000 per year, it’s also an incredibly lucrative position with explosive growth. As industries begin to realize how much data they currently have and how to use it for their own growth, these job roles will only become more sought after.
As the number of industries using AI and Data Science continues to grow, so do the locations for these types of roles. Generally, the San Francisco Bay Area is touted as the hub for all data science and machine learning. While many jobs still exist in Silicon Valley, this expansion of data science usage for a variety of industries has led to a dispersion of job locations. Many of the locations are still in California, such as Los Angeles, but there has still been a surge of tech migration throughout the rest of the country as well. Some places that seemed somewhat surprising in LinkedIn’s report for these roles included Boston, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. In fact, Builtin’s 32 Artificial Intelligence Companies Building A Smarter Tomorrow listed eight companies not located in New York or the San Francisco Bay Area. The largest concentrations according to this list were Boston (DataRobot, Neurala, and Nutonomy) and Chicago (Tempus and Narrative Science).
This is important because no matter what your company does, or where it is located, machine learning and data science will be a necessity in the near future. But it also shows that given this trend of expansion, finding data scientists to work in your field and location is not only becoming necessary, but also easier.
