Data Science has been in the news for past few years now and it looks like it will be in the news for at least next 5–6 years.
The industry has introduced many new roles but since the industry is still very new, there are no clear boundaries defined between the roles and sometimes are referred collectively as Data Science.
In this article, we will talk about the 4 popular roles which you might have heard about or read about in news.
- Data Analyst
- Data Scientist
- Data Engineer
- Machine Learning Engineer
This list is in no way exhaustive as there are many other roles, but by far, these are the most popular ones and hence, we will look at these in-depth.
Data Analyst uses various tools in order to analyze data and find insights, trends or other information which will help in decision making for the company or clients. A Data Analyst usually performs tasks like analyzing the data to understand it, creating reports and dashboards from the data as well as cleaning and analyzing the quality of data.
This role is very similar to Data Analyst and many companies use the two roles interchangeably. But usually, apart from the work done by data analysts, data scientists also go a step further and make predictions based on the data adding further value. A Data Scientist uses his computer and mathematical skills along with domain/business knowledge to solve some of the most important problems of a business.
Raw data is unstructured and its very likely that it is collected from multiple sources and stored at different places. A data engineer’s job is to create data pipelines which takes this raw, unstructured data and transforms it into a clean format which is easy to work with for Data Scientists or Data Analysts.
This role involves knowing software engineering as well as data science techniques like machine learning and deep learning. A machine learning engineer follows the best coding practices and deploys the models built (either by him or Data Scientists) to production with the ability to scale them as and when required.
