For years there has been a conversation around Artificial Intelligence becoming so strong and so universally informed that it can become a threat to the continuity of humanity. As artificial intelligence continues to grow in production use today, we are uncovering different aspects where there is a lot of risk.
I’m Dominick Romano, and as an engineer with a background in Video Game Development, Digital Marketing, and Enterprise Software Development, I spent the last year inventing what the platform should be to harness, control, and power AI of the future and reduce associated risk. An Operating System for Artificial Intelligence called drainpipe.io currently in private beta.
I found the great and informative article and felt the need to speak on it:
https://venturebeat.com/2020/12/19/how-to-create-space-for-ethics-in-ai/
To discuss ethics in AI or “Ethical AI” we have to dive into the deeper meaning of what Artificial Intelligence really is, numbers representing probabilities of an array of associated outcomes. Those probabilities are trained, algorithmically not much different to teaching a dog to sit patiently and repeatedly while rewarding the desired result. See a piece of information, associate it with this piece of information, do so correctly, get a reward. As of today, we teach and train AI as it relates to our understanding of it, and our understanding of our own brains. But humans have faults, and so does the software humans create, its just part of nature, its also part of nature that some humans find those faults in software and exploit them.
So lets address potential ethical imbalances in AI and how these issues can actually be addressed, and I will wrap up with my manifesto for legislative action.
AI requires data. Data always has a source. Even if we haven’t discovered it yet. That is a fundamental rule of science and nature. If we look at the population of citizens in The United States (thanks wolfram alpha) we can see the disparity in just total populations. So lets imagine something, if we were to take everyday general decision making from The United States and push it into an algorithm and train a machine to make decisions like the US, would the resulting cyborg make decisions as a black man or white man? If it only knows of decisions would it know of race? If it knows of race can it detect race based decisions?
We have to step out of the emotions of whats happening in the country and world today, and into a world where information is just genetic. Where the kids game of telephone is actually a story of our brief time here, before our stories are retold for the generations after us in some undefined variance of their original form. With enough data, some AI algorithms, are able to infer and predict context (intersecting vectors). So what if we took this example we are working on with the population in the United States, and we balanced the data input? How?
This would require generating decisions, or developing an artificial ethics, which once we get here we get into some really hairy territory over representation, generation, and what is actually ethical. In our example lets say its possible to take a single persons day’s worth of decision making and simulate the kinds of decisions they would make, but it wouldn’t have much variance, would be subject to a low confidence on day two, but lets talk for a second about what Black Swans, the power of math, physics, and Monte Carlo simulations all have in common with this problem.
A Black Swan is a term referring to the occurrence and impact of the highly improbable, and as much of the world is gearing up this holiday season for a very 2020 end of the year… there is a lot that happened this year that in the year prior many would have laughed at toward the rather highly improbable. Undertrained AI is no different than being a Human on earth in between 2019 an 2020 in a sense. Going back to our example if we take one person’s days worth of decision making and try to predict their decisions on day 2, we won’t have confidence due to the lack / imbalance of data. Everything is improbable because the associated historical probability data is so limited. This is where math, physics, and Monte Carlo comes in.
Behold, Monte Carlo. This is 250 Monte Carlo Simulations of stock prices by simulated days. Monte Carlo simulations like this, can create data which when reverse tested has the ability to produce novel findings in science when the data is scaled to massive amounts and compressed.
So what if we used AI or simple timed checks to evaluate for disparity in populations, and use Monte Carlo Simulations to balance the population’s information output through simulation? The result might be a dataset that could be used to essentially train away the imbalance through variance and confidence. Cognitive Bias or Cultural Racism at their very core are almost solely a result of a lack of information, or imbalanced reference set.
My Legislative Manifesto is this:
The United States needs legislation immediately establishing large public use, data aggregators, sellers, publishers, or providers with audiences and datasets amassed at larger than an agreed and defined size should be subject to regulation and audit as a public utility.
This will force the ending of the walled gardens while information continues to be amassed by companies on everything and nothing can be verified. At a certain size, your company should be expected to carry the torch as a beaconing light for innovation and greater good, and that should be a requirement of all American Business Institutions.
We need an infrastructure where innovation can thrive, and there is checks and balances in the storage, and usage of Personally Identifiable Information. The passing of such legislation as mentioned above would force innovation in how securely and honestly data is stored or used.
It is my life’s mission to enable people with the highest standards & controls over the information they have amassed throughout their lives and providing a platform to add and organize more, while putting it to use in realtime to adapt to ever an changing history and ever changing circumstances. Join me in this mission by signing up for early access to drainpipe.io™ a cutting edge operating system for artificial intelligence which allows you to drag and drop assets then used train your own artificial intelligence to make realtime predictions and inferences on what ever data you throw at it there after. https://drainpipe.io
