Hoping to increase emergency times and more hospitals on the road for long hours, San Diego changed the company instead of running the city’s hospital on Saturday from American Medical Response in Falck USA.
This is the first time in more than two decades that San Diego has made such a change. Ambulance hours have increased from 840 to 1,008, and the number of ambulances is increasing. about a dozen.
The change, which was approved by Fire-Rescue Chief Colin Stowell and approved by City Council in April, was hailed by civil rights leaders as an opportunity to increase inefficient response times to south of State Highway 94.
The change officially began at 7:49 a.m. Saturday when Falck Hospital responded to an emergency in San Ysidro. City officials said the response with several others on Saturday morning went smoothly.
City fire officials worked closely with Falck on six months of changes to prepare for deployment, which would require AMR to continue to operate the ambulance as a paralytic provider. as Falck expands his work locally.
“It’s a smooth transition,” Deputy Fire Chief Jodie Pierce said Saturday morning at the hospital site in Kearny Mesa. “The last six months of work have paid off today. It is the culmination of everyone’s work. ”
Pierce stressed that there will be no change in service for San Diego residents, only a different name on the hospital that will be displayed.
“There’s absolutely no disruption to 911 service in our communities,” Pierce said, noting that people calling the same phone number, reach the same messengers and will see more the same physicians and emergency technicians.
Falck, a Danish company that also operates hospital services in Orange and Alameda, hired many of the doctors and EMTs who worked for San Diego as AMR staff.
“That’s what makes it an obsolete system,” Pierce said.
One of the concerns was that the end of the six -month shift occurred at the end of the holidays when the phone was usually high. But Pierce said there are no problems.
“This may not be a good situation, but we have adapted and we have come strong and we are ready to give service,” he said.
Falck’s officers were equally good about the key.
“This is a great day in everything – for the city, for the people of San Diego and for Falck,” said Jeff Behm, the company’s chief executive who leads Falck’s work. “It begins a whole new journey for us.”
Behm said Falck is growing by promising 1,008 hours of hospitalization. They started work with 33 of their 66 ambulances as new vehicles; the 33 older cars are scheduled for replacement to new models in the spring.
In addition to putting more hospitals on the road for several hours, Falck also plans to use the details to improve service, Behm said. The company will conduct tests to determine the number of typical phones by map and time of day.
“It’s like you’re not wasting unit hours, you’re using them effectively,” Behm said.
He predicted that Falck would be made to “settle” within 30 to 60 days. One concern is the company’s struggle to hire the same doctors, which has been a problem in the country since the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic. Behm said the company, which had nine doctors who did not reach its goal last month, has fallen behind since then. .Pirce said city officials will soon begin reviewing Falck’s performance during responses to see where improvements can be made.
“We will be collecting data over the next few months so that we can have a perspective as well as a hopeful view of where we live,” he said.
