SAN DIEGO – Construction of a massive overhaul of Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport will spur changes for passengers starting next month.
Starting on June 5, the parking lot of Terminal 1 will be closed to incoming traffic, airport officials said on Wednesday. This means that no cars will be allowed on the plot and all cars that remain there must be removed by June 14 before the permanent closure of the plot the next day.
That’s a change that comes from a $ 3.4 billion effort to replace the 1960s terminal that will eventually lead to the opening of the new Terminal 1 Parking Plaza in late 2024.
Another shift for passengers is happening on June 15, when the pedestrian bridge in front of Terminal 1 is permanently closed, officials said. The bridge, which offers passengers a way to the parking lot and the airport island of land transport, is being replaced by a pedestrian crossing in front of the terminal.
The airport has informed San Diegans of the changes with its governing body, the San Diego Airport Regional Administration, expecting a large number of passengers this summer.
“We expect an increased number of passengers as early as Remembrance Day weekend,” CEO and CEO Kimberly Becker said in a statement. “We are ready to welcome everyone who travels during the summer months. However, construction has begun on the new T1, which is a replacement for the current Terminal 1. ”
Becker urges passengers to plan ahead and expect delays due to construction and lack of on-site parking.
“We understand that construction can be an inconvenience, but we promise that the result will be worth it,” she said.
The multi-stage project is expected to be completed by the airport administration last October by the end of 2028. By then, the new terminal will offer 30 gates, more lanes for security checkpoints, a “refreshed” mix of food and beverage suppliers. and various airport road system upgrades.
Officials say that, if everything goes according to plan, 19 of those gates could be opened as early as July 2025, and construction of the remaining 11 gates is expected to begin the same month.
