On the morning of September 25, 1902, children were excused from school to watch costumed performers parade through the streets before the show began.
More than 11,000 people lined up for the parade and the two performances that followed. The official population of San Diego was 17,700 in 1900.

W.F. Cody, “Buffalo Bill,” entertained the people of San Diego yesterday numbering about eleven thousand or more at two performances of the “wild West Show” and the “Congress of Rough Riders” and more than that, many people on the streets of the city during the morning parade.

There were many people from the back country in the town, the trains having brought many yesterday morning and many having come the day before or yesterday morning.
Hotels and restaurants were doing big business and the streetcar lines had everyone they could accommodate, afternoons and evenings. the national city and otay road had put a few city trains at the twenty-sixth street siding and a long line of red cars from that road stood at the entrance to the fairgrounds at the end of both performances. These relieved congested conditions just as shows were canceled and tram lines were able to handle people without too much delay in either direction.
The trains arrived from the north between 8 and 9 am. the trains containing the tents, seats and most of the baggage were directed to the park at the foot of Twenty-sixth Street, where they were unloaded by the experienced men assigned to this work, and it was not long before a huge area of canvas has been spread out. Mr. Cody’s private car and some of the other cars on one of the trains were at the D Street depot, and many passengers with their animals were disembarked there.
Crowds gathered at one o’clock yesterday morning to watch the parade. From about 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the streets through which the parade was to pass were packed with people. Fifth Street was a spectacle as the corps of fifes and drums leading the procession rounded the corner to C Street.
there is something weird and wonderful about Buffalo Bill’s parade compared to a circus parade. There’s nothing so monstrous about it. It didn’t have the same reception a circus gets, it was a more interested crowd. the parade somehow demanded more respect. Buffalo Bill’s Congress of Nations is not only interesting and informative but truly inspiring. Buffalo Bill, near the head of the procession, was greeted with old-time enthusiasm, showing that he was still the favorite of young America as well as the aged.
As the long line of Germans, English, Cubans, Turks, Negroes, Arabs, Transvaal horsemen and Cossacks passed, the crowd was silent, but enthusiasm was awakened when the American riders appeared on the scene, for the first time since Buffalo Bill. passed by the cheering crowd. There was an air of business and general efficiency that appealed to the crowd while arousing their enthusiasm and patriotism.
And then there were the Indians, Indians with garish blankets and stoic, indifferent faces, who still interest the American people. their names were well known, such as Young Spotted Tail, Crow Dog and others. It was a magnificent spectacle. The Cossacks with their long gray coats, Astrachan hats and high saddles were watched with interest by all eyes, as they were representatives of a nation that considers itself the potential competitor of this country.
It was an intellectual treat, a reminder of the past and the present. One of the most interesting features of the parade were the beautiful horses. It will be remembered that Buffalo Bill lost a number of his best horses about a year ago in a collision in the South, but he replaced them all with equally magnificent specimens of the equine breed which this country produces. It can truly be said that there is only one Bison Bill and his followers are unique.
