Coastal communities prepare for the next round of “King Tides,” which produce high waves that crash against the shoreline.
SAN DIEGO — The California coastline, including San Diego, was hit by high waves caused by a rare phenomenon called the “king tide.”
Oceanographers say San Diegans expects big swells for January 21 and 22.
What is a king tide?
“Tides are a non-scientific term that people often use to describe unusually high tides. Tides are long-term waves that roll over the planet as the oceans are “pulled” back and forth by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun like this body interacts with Earths in their monthly and yearly orbits,” according to the National Ocean Service.
Isabelle Kay, reserves manager at UC San Diego, says seas are expected to rise by about five feet by 2100.
“This is great for kids to think about because this is going to be the shoreline they need to be tough on,” said Isabelle Kay, reserve manager at UC San Diego.
When can I see the king tides?
Several reporting stations around the San Diego coastline send data to the National Oceanic Administration, which collects data here.
You can select a reporting station, such as Point Loma, La Jolla, Mission Bay, etc., which will display a detailed description of the tides.
King tides are expected to be at their highest starting around 8:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, and at their lowest at 3:21 p.m., NOAA reports.
On Sunday, January 22, a swell is expected around 8:50 a.m. and receding around 4 p.m., NOAA details.
In the Kendall-Frost Marsh Nature Reserve, Saturday Morning tides showed local environmentalists how some of the region’s wetlands can sink as sea levels rise.
This is why nonprofits like the San Diego Audubon Society are asking city leaders to prioritize restoration.
“In Mission Bay, it’s the last 40 acres of this kind of habitat where you can see the swell changing the habitat drastically. We have a project called revival mission bay, where we try to restore most of this habitat. Therefore, there is more of this tidal swamp wetland ecosystem,” said Andrew Mayor, who is part of the Audubon Society.
Councilman Joe LaCava from district one oversees this part of the county and also watches what goes on in the reserves; he says he understands the importance of conserving San Diego’s wetlands.
“We have endangered species with limited habitats, but we also have to consider our public infrastructure and how rising sea levels will affect it. And how do we need to prepare in advance so that we protect our public infrastructure, we protect the environmental habitat,” said LaCava
With king tide here, the San Diego city crew has prepared for the worst.
On the Pacific Coast, crews used bulldozers to pile sand near the sidewalks in case of erosion—sandbags were also handed out to nearby businesses.

What should you not touch in tide pools?
Can jellyfish be found in tidal pools? For the uninitiated, tidal pools are small rocky pockets along the ocean that collect saltwater during high tide. Some are small, others are large. An entire community of marine life lives in these tidal pools–sponges, slugs, sea slugs, jellyfish, mussels and even octopuses.
What is not allowed to touch in a tide pool? Touching crabs or jellyfish puts you at risk of being squished or stung (you’re better off not touching them at all). Be sure to track the tides so you have time to return to higher ground. Wet rocks are a good indicator of where the waves are crashing, so stay away from this ‘waterline’.
Can you touch sea anemones in tide pools?
Sea anemones have stinging cells at the end of their tentacles, called nematocysts, which they use to paralyze their prey. Human skin is too tough to be affected, so you can touch a sea anemone in a tide pool without worry. They will feel a little sticky, but not painful.
What are the dangers of living in a tide pool?
Slip and Fall. This is the most common type of injury in tidepools. Wet rock, uneven surfaces, loose sand, slippery algae, and changing tides all contribute to these conditions. Throw in a light drizzle or thick layer of sea and slick conditions can add up.

Which of the following conditions make life in tide pools difficult?
Animals in this region have to deal with extremely harsh conditions including drought, high temperatures, sudden and often crashing waves, long periods without food, and frequent beach washing. Only a few creatures such as seaweed, crabs, mussels and chitons can survive in this region.
Why is life in tidepool so challenging? A Challenge To Living In The Intertidal Zone The rapidly changing conditions of the tidal pool make survival a challenge. Exposure to waves and sun varies widely. Abundant sunlight, which helps intertidal plant life grow quickly, can also quickly dry out precious moisture and raise water temperatures.
What is life like in a tide pool?
At high tide, the plants and animals in the pond are bathed in fresh seawater, but must survive the crashing waves and forage for fish with temporary access to the shoreline. To survive in this harsh environment, tide pool dwellers often cling very tightly to any rock they can cling to.
What type of tide pool is the most difficult for animals to live in? All tide pools consist of three zones: the splash zone, the intertidal zone, and the subtidal zone. Splash zone: This zone is farthest from the ocean, making it the hardest zone to live in.
