SAN DIEGO – The first day of summer brought scattered showers, thunderstorms and even lightning in parts of the San Diego region on Tuesday evening.
Storm activity was detected by the National Weather Service San Diego in the North County area.
“You do not imagine anything. Several lightning strikes were detected with a thunderstorm moving over Poway and now heading towards Escondido. The strike could be seen from Carlsbad and Oceanside,” the weather agency tweeted around 9:30 p.m.
NWS San Diego confirmed that Poway recorded 0.17 inches of rain while showers were reported at 7 p.m. at Barrett Lake in rural East County.
A thunderstorm that developed over Baja, California, moved toward 6 p.m. toward Campo, in which brief moderate rain, gusts and clouds to ground lightning were possible, according to weather officials.
The stormy conditions come as warm temperatures start the summer week.
