(CNN) One person was killed on Friday at the entrance to the Marine Corps recruiting depot in San Diego, authorities confirmed to CNN.
Shortly before noon, a vehicle attempted to enter the facility at a checkpoint, according to a spokesperson for the base in a statement released Friday evening.
The guards ordered the car to stop, but the driver got out with a knife and approached the gate with “hostile intent,” authorities said.
After several warnings, the driver was hit by the base’s personnel, the statement said.
An ambulance intervened and the driver was pronounced dead on the spot, authorities confirmed.
The San Diego Police Department has been called in to assist with the initial call, but the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) will handle the investigation, police said.
NCIS has released a statement, saying “Out of respect for the ongoing investigation process, we are unable to provide further details at this time.”
