DURHAM, N.C. – The Elon University men’s soccer team defeated San Diego 3-0 for their second clean sheet in as many games on Sunday afternoon, August 28 at Duke University’s Koskinen Stadium in their final game at the John Rennie Nike Classic Stadium. ? ? The Phoenix (2-0) had scoring performances from Mason Duval, Majaliwa Msabaha and Ryan Manna, each scoring their first collegiate goal. ? Elon had three players who earned All Tournament Team honors in Scott Vatne, Ryan Bilichuk and Franc Gamiz Quer. ? “Believe our team a lot of credit,” said Elon head coach Marc Reeves. “They played against a really good team from San Diego who have some really good and mature players. To come out and concede against them was good for our group and we’re looking forward to doing that leading up to our home opener against Northeastern set up next Saturday.” ? ? The Rundown • Both teams spent the first 15 minutes of the game groping each other before the game’s first shot came from Elon’s Calle Edelstam near the 16th minute, which was blocked by the San Diego defense.&#xD ; • Elon had both shots on target in the opening stanza. Duval took a shot from the left side in the 23rd minute, which was stopped by the keeper. Jack Dolk added another look in the 25th minute but it was also boxed in by the keeper. • The Phoenix came on in the second half to break the stalemate. Jannik Videbaek sent a through ball across the field to a storming Duval, who was able to sneak the ball past the keeper to make it 1-0. • Elon doubled his lead in the 77th minute. Vatne beat the defense down the left before sending a cross towards the penalty area. San Diego saved the ball again, but di A carom found the foot of Msabaha who fired a shot from the touch that snuck into the left post and scored his first career goal. • Elon added his third and final goal in the 89th minute. Vatne attacked a counterattack and sent a ball into the net of the box, where Manna scored his first career goal with 10 seconds left to end Phoenix’s goal in a 3-0 win. ? Notes • This is Elon’s first 2-0 win at the start of the season since 2015. • San Diego beat Phoenix 14-9, but Phoenix had six shots on target compared to four for the bullfighters. • Bilichuk made four saves in goal for the Phoenix in his second shutout of the young season. ? Next Phoenix will host Northeastern on Saturday, September 3 for its home game and Colonial Athletic Association opener. This game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tee time at Rudd Field. ?
