SAN DIEGO – San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria was in the Stockton neighborhood Saturday as a new type of housing development was unveiled.
The development is a 34-unit apartment building on Market Street.
It will offer one and three bedroom units. The buildings are pre-assembled and take just five days to build.
“The 34 units represent just a fraction of our current pipeline in the city of San Diego,” said Drew Orbenstein, CEO and founder of Impact Housing.
“These units were built by Southern Californians for Southern Californians; they are completely finished inside. We have kitchens, we have water tanks, we have air conditioners, we have our closets, they are ready to move in.”
“We need to be a city that says, ‘if you’re willing to work hard, we’ll give you a place here,’ and this project shows that,” Gloria said. “This project says we are ready to make you a place here at a price you can afford and put a roof over your head that you can be proud of.”
One-bedroom units will start at $1,700 a month and three-bedroom units will start at $2,500.
FOX 5 took a look at Zillow and found that the units aren’t that different from the current numbers.
The city said the units will be available in June and people can start applying for jobs in mid-May. It is one of many planned for the San Diego area, with over 1,300 planned.
