Monsoonal moisture flowing from Mexico’s northern Sonoran Desert produced thunderstorms in parts of eastern San Diego County Saturday that caused severe flooding on Route 78 near Borrego Springs and State Route 94 near Campo , according to the National Weather Service.
The storms – which came with a surprising amount of lightning – also produced wind gusts of up to 68 mph near Campo, 55 mph near Warner Springs and Mataguay, and 48 mph near Pine Valley.
The heaviest rain fell in Cameron, which recorded 0.84 inches, and Warner Springs, which received 0.67 inches. Rancho Bernardo received 0.32 inches and Campo received 0.23 inches.
“There could be more on Sunday, but things won’t be as active as today,” said meteorologist Brian Jones. “Mostly it will be near the Campo-Pine Valley road.”
The weather will remain mild in San Diego County through next week.
