INDIAN WELLS (CNS) — American Taylor Fritz, who was born in San Diego and attended Torrey Pines High School, defeated Russia’s Andrey Rublev on Saturday to earn a spot in the finals of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday .
Fritz, the 20th player in the world, beat seventh-ranked Rublev 7-5, 6-4 to advance to his seventh ATP Tour final and first at Indian Wells.
He will play against Rafael Nadal, the winner of Saturday’s other men’s semi-final against his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal is in fourth place.
“It doesn’t even seem real,” said Fritz, who went on a 13-game winning streak for Rublev. “It’s such a dream come true. It’s all the hard work I’ve put in over the years. I can see it finally paying off. That’s why I play tennis.”
Fritz is the first American to reach the Indian Wells final since John Isner in 2012.
“It’s going to be a very different match depending on which of them wins,” said Fritz. “But Rafas Rafa and Alcaraz have played really well all week. He’s a great player. I’ll have to play a lot like I did today.”
The women’s final takes place on Sunday and meets fourth-placed Iga Swiatek from Poland and sixth-placed Greece Maria Sakkari, who defeated last year’s winner in Indian Wells, Spain’s Paula Badosa, 6-2, 4-6, 6-6 on Friday :1 defeated .
“I’ve worked my whole life to get to those late stages of tournaments,” Sakkari said after her win. “I know it might look silly to someone – it’s not like I won the tournament, I’m in the final – but it means a lot to me.
Swiatek defeated Romanian Simona Halep 7-6, 6-4 on Friday.
“I know Iga really well, she’s a nice girl and a great player, she won a (grand) slam at the age of 19, she’s an incredible player – I respect her a lot and admire her game,” said Sakkari. “It’s going to be an amazing fight for both of us and a very tough match for both of us because I think we both really want to win this title.”
