America’s Finest City may not really be that spectacular after all – at least after an annual report of the best cities to live in the United States, which put San Diego pretty close to the end this year.
US News & amp; World Report analyzes 150 of the most popular metro areas in the country to determine the best places to live and retire. San Diego ranks 105th and 138th, respectively, among cities like Reno, Nevada; Boise, Idaho; in Jacksonville, Florida.
Roy Toft shot videos and still images of coyotes, California gray foxes, raptors, lynx, opossums, skunks, maul deer and raccoons on his East County property.
So why did San Diego rank so low?
The ranking is based on public data and user opinions in 5 categories on a weighted scale: quality of life (32.5%), value (25%), labor market (20%), how desirable it is (17.5%) and migration (5%).
San Diego
San Diego did not shoot particularly well in one category.
Although US News Contributor Darcie Brown praised San Diego positively for its weather, beaches, outdoor activities, good food and entertainment, desirability and quality of life scores remained moderate with rankings of 7.6 and 7.2, respectively.
The Quality of Life Index is also the most comprehensive when you consider crime rates, health access, education, well-being, air quality and commuting time in its assessment.
Not surprisingly, however, housing costs have kept us low on the list. San Diego had near the lowest score in the value category, which compares housing costs with the median household income to give San Diego a score of 3.3. The national average for housing in 2021 was $ 365,616, while San Diego’s average was 889,225 (which, of course, we know will be much higher for 2022).
“Living in San Diego is not particularly affordable,” Brown wrote. San Diegans are willing to pay these increased prices, though, often referring to the cost of living differences as “sunshine taxes” or the price of enjoying a temperate climate for an entire year.
The labor market category, which ranked the unemployment rate and average pay to create a ranking, landed San Diego a score of 6.2, which is not too far below the city ranked # 1 best place to live – Huntsville, Alabama – with a score of 7.2.
San Diego is also ranked quite low in net migration, with a score of 4.6, but that accounted for only 5% of the total score.
Huntsville, Alabama has earned top honors, largely due to high rankings in the value and labor market indices.
The top 10 cities on the list were:
If there is one consolation, however, San Diego, in third place compared to other metro areas in California, is behind San Jose and San Francisco.
US News reports that the data used in their rankings comes from sources such as the US Census Bureau, the FBI, the US Department of Labor and their internal resources. These data are then categorized into five indices, which are then weighted based on a survey of Americans who asked what they value when choosing a place to live.
