SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Molly and Scott Greene disembarked from a Disney Wonder ship Friday morning and stepped north past the Embarcadero in San Diego.
A few $ 20 tickets later, they boarded a much smaller ship: the San Diego Maritime Museum.
“We’re happy to be here today and spending the day in San Diego,” Molly said.
“This is how life should be, go out and see everything.”
But two years ago, life took a much different direction, with the coronavirus epidemic causing millions of canceled travel plans – vacations, jobs, conventions – gone. Hotels – doing the unthinkable — close at the start of the season.
“They had padlocks on the door. That’s how bad it was,” said Julie Coker, executive director of the San Diego Tourism Administration.
“They couldn’t even open up to visitors because they would lose more money if they opened their doors.”
Nearly 100,000 local leisure and hospitality workers lost their jobs in March 2020 due to orders to stay home and zoom meetings.
Now, with vaccines released and the coronavirus restrictions lifted, Americans are traveling again, filling hotels around the weekend – paying the most dollars.
“Prices are a lot higher than they were before,” said Lydia Bartell, vice president of the Bartell Hotel, which owns and operates eight hotels in San Diego.
“While this is good for hotels, it also puts a lot of pressure on us, so we’re excited to make a vacation that will be the best vacation of our guests’ lives.”
But while leisure travel is back, business and conventions aren’t exactly there. For example, attendance at a convention center is 50 to 85 percent of the pre-pandemic level, according to the San Diego Convention Center Corp.
And international travelers – who spend more and stay longer – are lagging behind.
“We are definitely on the right track and we have a positive message to say,” Coker said.
“I think we’re moving in the right direction, which is important.”
Coker added that county hotels had a capacity of 84 percent last week. She says they would be full at this time of year before the pandemic.
Zoker expects a full recovery in 2024 and noted that the industry employs various positions. As it stands now, leisure and catering jobs are about 8 percent below pre-pandemic levels.
