Masks will be optional for San Diego Unified School District students, staff and visitors beginning April 4, when students return from spring break, the school district announced Friday.
“As cases of COVID-19 in our community have begun to decline, we have been working with our scientific and medical experts to plan an ‘off-ramp’ to end some of the most restrictive health measures in place,” the district said in a statement. email to staff and families.
San Diego County was classified Thursday as having a “low” level of COVID-19, meaning wearing masks indoors, including in schools, is not necessary, according to recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. US diseases
This was the first criteria that needed to be clarified for the San Diego Unified School District to consider easing its indoor mask requirement.
California requires students and school staff to wear masks indoors through March 11, state officials announced Monday. After March 11, school districts can decide whether to continue to require masks or make them optional.
Many local school districts have announced that they will make masks optional beginning Monday, March 14, including Poway Unified, Ramona Unified, Carlsbad Unified, Cajon Valley Union, La Mesa-Spring Valley, Dehesa and Escondido Union.
Some, like San Diego Unified, have decided to continue to require masks after March 11. South Bay Union and San Ysidro Elementary said Friday they won’t lift the mask requirement until at least spring break.
Others are waiting before making a decision on masks. Sweetwater Union High says it won’t announce anything until March 14. Chula Vista Elementary will have its board decide at its March 9 meeting.
Earlier this week, several counties, including San Diego, were in the “high” COVID level category. The CDC guidelines outline certain recommended safety measures for counties based on whether they have a low, medium, or high level of COVID, which is based on COVID case rates and hospitalizations.
San Diego Unified leaders have said they would consult with UC San Diego health experts on the appropriate time to ease their mask requirement once the county moves out of the “high” tier category. On Thursday that happened with new data from the CDC showing San Diego in the “low” tier.
Dr. Howard Taras, a UC San Diego pediatrician who has been advising the San Diego Unified School District and other schools on COVID, said he thinks the county achieved the “low” ranking not so much because its rate of cases of coronavirus is very low, but because its COVID hospitalizations are low.
San Diego County had a rate of 159 COVID cases per 100,000 people for the seven days leading up to March 3, according to the CDC.
Taras said deciding when it’s safe to lift the school mask requirement now depends on what people value.
“If you define ‘safe’ as a very low chance that teachers will need to be out (due to COVID isolation or quarantine) or that students with special health care needs are at very low risk of contracting COVID at school, so my response would be to wait until case rates go down a bit more,” Taras wrote in an email. “So, it’s really a question of community values at this stage.”
San Diego Unified will continue other COVID safety measures, including the use of air filters in classrooms, COVID testing, and contact tracing. The district said it will also give students and staff rapid at-home COVID tests to use when they return to school after spring break.
