Ismael “El Mayo”, the son of the Zambada Sinaloa cartel’s royal head, has been sentenced to nine years in prison in San Diego’s federal court for helping run the Mexico-based drug trafficking empire.
Ismael Zambada Imperial, 37, better known as “Mayito Gordo,” was not sentenced to pay a fine in Friday’s trial, but was ordered to lose $ 5 million in illegal profits as agreed in his agreement.
Zambada Imperial found him guilty in April 2021 of two charges: conspiracy to import methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana, and conspiracy to distribute these drugs. He admitted in his allegation agreement that he was the main coordinator of the drug trafficking operation and ordered acts of violence in favor of the cartel.
The indictment alleges that the cartel used everything from vehicles to airplanes to submarines to transport drugs from Mexico to the north and to the United States to distribute throughout the country. He also used sophisticated money laundering and bulk smuggling networks to return his illegal profits to the hands of the cartel.
His father, who for years directed the Sinaloa cartel along with the best-known Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, is the main defendant in the 2014 San Diego indictment and remains a fugitive, as is his son Ismael “Mayito Flaco” Zambada Sicairos. Guzmán was separately indicted in New York, tried at trial and is serving a life sentence in Colorado.
The cartel has retained control of a large portion of the U.S. illicit drug market despite convictions against several senior members of Sinaloa, while Jalisco Nueva Generación continues to fight for dominance against the powerful and savage cartel. There is also an internal conflict, as factions loyal to El Mayor compete with the sons of El Chapo for full rule.
Zambada Imperial was extradited to San Diego in December 2019 without fanfare after serving five years in prison in Mexico on charges of weapons. In his case the public court case is scarce, with many documents filed under seal, as is usual in poster cases.
Two other sons of El Mayo have been convicted in the U.S.: Vicente Zambada Niebla of Chicago, who became the chief cooperator, and his younger brother Serafin Zambada Ortiz in San Diego.
