Starting Saturday, kids will be admitted free to dozens of San Diego County museums and attractions throughout October.
Organized by the San Diego Museum Board and the San Diego Tourism Authority, the Kids Free San Diego program includes free admission for children 12 and under at more than 50 locations.
Last year, 30,000 children and 17,000 adults participated in the Umeak Dohaini program. As the pandemic subsides and new museums join this year, attendance is expected to grow. Kids Free San Diego’s goal is to remove the cost barrier for low-income residents. The program accepts museum tickets during what is traditionally a slow season for tourism.
“With so much to see and do, San Diego is always a kid’s paradise,” Bob Lehman, executive director of the San Diego Museum Council, said in a statement. “But in October, kids are even better.”
Participating museums this year include the recently opened Mingei International Museum and the newly opened Comic-Con Museum, which is featuring “Marvel’s Spider-Man: Beyond Amazing – The Exhibition.” Fleet Science Center, Chicano Park Museum and Cultural Center, Maritime Museum of San Diego, Museum of Making Music, Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, Museum of Us, New Children’s Museum, San Diego Air & Space Museum, San Diego Botanical Garden, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, San Diego Model Railroad Museum and San Diego Natural History Museum.
Participating museums are listed at sandiegomuseumcouncil.org. To participate, parents fill out a short form on the website and a free child coupon will be emailed to them. Some museums offer free admission for two children with each paying adult, and some art museums offer free admission year-round.
In addition to the museums, many of San Diego’s themed attractions also offer discounts for children in October. SeaWorld San Diego is offering free admission for children with a paying adult to its Spooktacular Halloween dance party events on weekends through October 31st. And City Cruises offers free rides for kids on one-hour San Diego harbor cruises. Details can be found on the Tourism Authority website at sandiego.org/promotions/kids-free.aspx.
