SAN DIEGO –Steve Fisher, former San Diego State men’s basketball coach and Aztecs Hall of Fame member, will be the recipient of the 2022 San Diego Nice Guy of the Year award on Saturday, 1 of October, at the Nice Guys of San Diego’s 42nd Annual Nice Year Gala. Nice Guys of San Diego, Inc., which has been in existence since 1979, recognizes the contributions of individuals to the communities of San Diego in fulfilling the Nice Guys motto of “offering a hand up, not handout.” The non-profit charitable organization was built around the idea of providing one-time, but substantial, assistance to families in need and serving the citizens of San Diego by providing help to get them back on their feet. To date, Nice Guys of San Diego has donated more than $21 million to individuals and families throughout San Diego County and half of the proceeds from the October 1st event will go to charity of Coach Fisher’s choice, the ALS Association.&# xD; Turning around a once moribund San Diego State men’s basketball program, Coach Fisher led the Aztecs to a record 10 Mountain West conference titles, eight NCAA tournaments and 13- il postseason appearance in his 18th season on The Mesa. But his contributions to the city did not end with the transformation of the Aztec men’s basketball program. He serves as a role model and mentor to the hundreds of student-athletes who were under his tutelage during his time as a coach and remains involved in the lives of his former players to this day. Retiring from the bench after the 2016-17 season, Coach Fisher remained intimately involved in the San Diego State community and the community at large. As an ambassador for the Aztec Club, he is an integral part of SDSU Athletics’ capital campaigns, represents the university at local community events, and in general who is the “everyday nice guy” of San Diego State. Since first setting foot on campus in 1999, he has been a steady and steady force that has helped guide San Diego State to levels of success both on the field and in the community that are unprecedented in -history of the university. Coach Fisher will join recent recipients of the Nice Guy of the Year Award, including San Diego Padres chairman Peter Seidler, notable philanthropist and San Diego State donor Conrad Prebys, as well as Doug Manchester, Ernest Rady among others.
