Maya Madsen, the founder of Maya’s Cookies, never planned to open a brick-and-mortar store for her gourmet vegan cookies. She started operations at Little Italy Farmers’ Market in 2015 and then focused on selling them online.
Madsen gained popularity this year when people – eager to support Black companies like hers as the Black Lives Matter movement grew – flooded her Grantville bakery wholesaler with orders. When sales rose 10,000 percent, she transformed the bakery lobby into a tiny storefront – her first brick-and-mortar store.
Now it is developing again. Earlier this month, it opened its second location in San Marcos, alongside many other local businesses in the North City estate that is becoming downtown near Cal State San Marcos and Highway 78. Now San Diegans can not only find its gourmet treats online, but or he can visit the larger store at 250 N. City Drive to buy freshly baked cookies.
“I didn’t think I would ever have a brick because I didn’t think it was something I could afford or support,” said the 52-year-old entrepreneur.
Maya Madsen, owner of Maya’s Cookies, poses at the grand opening of her newest store in San Marcos.
After opening that first little store in 2020, she realized she was on to something.
“I love interacting and meeting customers, and inviting them here and taking cookies right out of the oven,” she said. “So then I realized that brick and mortar could be something that Maya’s cookies could grow into.”
It also made sense as her company showed steady growth and since then sales have grown by around 20 percent each year.
Maya’s cookies are vegan – meaning they don’t contain eggs, dairy, or animal products as ingredients – but they don’t lack creativity or pizazz. Cookies come in classic flavors like chocolate chips as well as quirky twists like “Drunken Granny” with brown sugar oatmeal and rum-soaked raisins.
People can order one flavor of six cookies for as low as $ 26 or a variety box with a curated assortment of cookies from $ 28 to $ 57 – the latter for a dozen “Maya Signature Collection.”

“I’m glad people give our cookies to cheer someone up and it makes me happy to be responsible for someone else’s joy,” she said because most of their e-commerce sales are gifts for everything from birthdays after parting and condolences.
Madsen said it was open to expanding its stores outside of San Diego, but noted that growing a small business costs money, so it’s not a simple endeavor. He wants to be aware of the growth and not grow too fast – the local business is already sending their cookies all over the country and has appeared on the Home Shopping Network twice.
Madsen is very conscientious about his business decisions and helps others along the way, such as black entrepreneurs, women and LGBTQ people. One example is the refrigerator in her new store, which is home to teas from Brooklyn Best, a New York-based Black company, and Just Water, the brand of artist and rapper Jaden Smith.
Madsen said it strategically placed its new North County location near a tram station to be accessible to San Diegans and its 22 employees.
Although the company has been in business for seven years, Madsen still considers its business relatively new and says it “continues to refine and refine its products” to improve its products. Regarding San Diego’s growing coverage, Madsen points to the Grantville location – which was not originally meant to be a store – as the starting line.
“I like to joke and say it’s our eighth grade,” said Madsen. “San Marcos, I am considering more locations for my freshmen and here I will learn a lot about running a real brick and mortar space. So I’m excited about it.
