“They are everywhere now,” sighed Mario Escalera.
Escalera is part of the City of San Diego pothole repair team. He said he always knows that his work will increase when the rain clouds hit the city.

“We always say, ‘Holy cow. Here come the big holes,'” Escalera said.
The city of San Diego said it had more than 15,000 reported potholes in 2022.
“We try to do at least 30 holes a day,” Escalera said as he tackled a hole Friday on Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach.
He laughed when asked if the storms meant “job security”.
“It’s good for us, but sad for the citizens of this city,” he shrugged.
Waves have increased due to the storm and waves on Friday are expected to reach 16 feet. A high surf warning was in effect along the coast until 18:00. Friday and the lifeguards were asking people to stay out of the water.
Escalera said other drivers are the biggest danger to his job. Otherwise, it was the ever-growing “to-do” list that is regularly populated by reports via the city’s Get It Done app.
The City of San Diego said it took crews an average of nine days to fix each hole in 2022. That was a big improvement over 2021, when crews took an average of 19 days to close a claim.
