A study of potential living kidney donors found that the main reason for the reluctance to donate was “fear for their health after donation”.
Many may fear that giving up one vital organ to help another may somehow impair their ability to be physically active, to go out and experience the world in the same way they could before giving such a gift.
Thousands of people gathered in San Diego on Saturday to prove this is not quite the case.
They lined up on North Harbor Drive at 9:00 am to march south to Seaport Village, a colorful procession designed to kick off the 18th Transplant Games of America, four days of friendly competition between organ donors and recipients throughout , from swimming and basketball to bowling and cornhole pickleball and Texas Hold ’em poker thrown in for good measure.
It’s the first time the biennial event has been held in San Diego, and as of Wednesday it attracts around 10,000 attendees to the convention center.
After riding in a wagon made by Rady Children’s Hospital, Dina MacDonald, a kidney donor to her husband in 2008 and also the hospital’s transplant coordinator, said the event has multiple reasons for existing. There is certainly a desire to show that life after transplantation can be active. But there is also a desire to pay homage to the broad circle of affected people whenever a disease causes a person to need a replacement organ.
“It’s a way to celebrate both living donors and also to celebrate the families of those donors, to honor them and show them what a difference their donations are making in the world,” MacDonald said.
His personal participation in the games, he said, will arrive in a swimming pool at UC San Diego on Sunday as a participant in the swim competition.
There is a definite need to increase organ donation in America.
According to organdonor.gov, the government’s official repository of transplant information, 106,023 Americans are currently awaiting organ donations and an average of 17 people die each day on the waiting list.
Of course, some organs, such as the heart and lungs, can only be administered after a person’s death. Honoring that commitment, marked on a person’s driver’s license when joining the national organ donation program, is an important part of these games.
Many, such as Ann-Marie Buczynski of Acton, a small town near Santa Clarita, attend not long after receiving the organs. Buczynski underwent a double lung transplant 18 months ago after a condition called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis scarred her lungs so badly that she spent two years confined to her home, in oxygen cylinders.
Going down Saturday wearing a protective mask – organ recipients must use anti-rejection drugs that suppress the immune system – he said breathing the outside air in San Diego Bay was cathartic.
“Just being able to walk freely is a miracle for me,” he said.
And, she added, going out and moving honors the person who gave her the chance to go on living.
“The purpose of this event is to say thank you to our donors, to show that we are not abusing the gift we have been given, that we are celebrating life and pursuing it with every breath we take,” said Buczynski.
He said he intended to go beyond walking in the parade, signing up to compete in volleyball, Texas Hold ’em, and cornhole.
