House GOP seeks new restrictions on use of US oil stockpile
For the second time this month, Republicans are seeking to limit the president’s use of the nation’s emergency oil stockpiles — a proposal that has already attracted a White House veto threat. The GOP bill set for a vote on Friday will require the government to offset any non-emergency withdrawal from the Strategic Oil Reserve with new drilling in public lands and oceans. Republicans accuse President Joe Biden of misusing reserves for political reasons to keep gas prices low, while Biden said tapping the reserves was necessary last year in response to a ban on imports of Russian oil following President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Rybakina meets Sabalenka in Australian Open women’s final
Aryna Sabalenka thought she would feel the jitters when she stepped off the court to face Elena Rybakina in the women’s final of the Australian Open. Saturday’s contest, however, was Sabalenka’s first singles title match at a Grand Slam tournament. Sabalenka is 24 years old from Belarus; The 23-year-old Rybakina who was born in Moscow started representing Kazakhstan in 2018 when the country offered to fund her tennis career.
Clemson starter Galloway will miss time after surgery
Clemson starter Brevin Galloway is expected to miss the game for the 24th-ranked Tigers after undergoing surgery on his groin area Thursday.
